East West Forum

Twice a year AOMA sponsors the East West Forum in which biomedical and alternative medicine practitioners come together to talk about a specific medical topic.  There is no charge to attend this event.  RSVP to . Donations to Herbal Outreach are appreciated. 

Exploring Pain – Medication or Meditation?
Friday June 13 2008, from 6:00-9.00 pm

Join us for a discussion on an East West approach to understanding and treating different forms of acute and chronic pain, according to the clinical experiences of a wide range of practitioners and teachers from Western and Asian Medicine. The panel will include experts in the fields of Anesthesiology, Pain Management, Obstetrics, Asian Bodywork Therapy, Qigong, and Psychosocial Aspects of Clinical Training.

Pamela Ellen Ferguson Dipl ABT (NCCAOM), AOBTA®-CI, LMT (TX):  International Teacher of Shiatsu and author of nine books including The Self Shiatsu Handbook and TAKE FIVE. AOMA’s former Dean of Asian Bodywork Therapy, and former Director of Council of Schools and Programs, American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (AOBTA®).

Lorena Monda L.Ac, DOM, MS: Acupuncturist, Body-Centered Psychotherapist and Qigong Instructor. AOMA’s teacher of Clinical Counseling and Communication Skills since l994. Former Consultant to the Texas Center for Battered Women in Austin. Author of The Practice of Wholeness: Spiritual Transformation in Everyday Life.

Edward R. “ERJ” Johnson  MD: Professor of Anesthesia, University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas. Former acting chair, Department of Anesthesia, and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.

Donna Robinson  RNC, MHS: Perinatal Clinical Educator and chair of Pain Management Committee, St David’s North Austin Medical Center. Former Adjunct Clinical Professor,  School of Nursing, University of Florida (at Jacksonville). Donna has taught OB to medical and nursing students as far afield as Saudi Arabia and Thailand.

Yuxia Qiu L.Ac, MD(China): AOMA’s teacher of Acupuncture Techniques, Qigong, Tai Chi and Calligraphy. Former  teacher of foreign students at a TCM hospital in Beijing. Author of many books and articles on gastrology, gynecology, needle techniques and Qigong.

At 6 pm we will also celebrate the launch of SAND TO SKY – Conversations with Teachers of Asian Medicine highlighting the experiential innovations and insights of a range of international teachers including several members of AOMA’s faculty past and present. The anthology was co-created and co-edited by Pamela Ellen Ferguson, and Debra Duncan Persinger PhD (Executive Director of the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards and former interim CEO of the NCCAOM).
