AOMA has two academic advisors who promote student learning and development. Robert Laguna, M.S.O.M, L.Ac., AOMA class of ’97, also serves as dean of students. Lesley Hamilton, M.S.O.M., L.Ac., AOMA class of ’02, also serves as teaching assistant in the Herbal Studies department. Both advisors are experienced practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine.
The advisors provide guidance for students concerning their educational activities. They engage students about the details of the program, fulfillment of prerequisites, and conduct degree audits. Online degree audits implemented fall 2007 give students access to detailed transcript and program requirement information through the institution’s CAMS system. Working closely with faculty, advisors identify at-risk learners and plan steps for remediation.
Advisors promote student development as they identify and respond to interpersonal issues, financial stressors, and family or personal challenges of students. They refer to qualified local professionals when appropriate. Lists of specialists in the fields of health, mental health, learning disabilities, chemical dependencies, and other resources are made available to learners as needed.
