Admissions
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree or higher, or the equivalent, from a regionally accredited institution. If you do not hold at least a bachelor's degree, please see "Exception" below.
- Demonstrated scholastic achievement at the undergraduate level evidenced by a minimum grade point average of 2.5 in the last 60 hours of study.
AOMA accepts a maximum of 15 semester credits completed outside the collegiate setting. Such credits must have been previously accepted by a regionally-accredited college or university and documented on the official transcript sent to AOMA. No credit may be accepted for life experience or for years of service in a position or job.
Applicants who meet the admissions requirements will be considered for admission upon submission of:
- Completed application form
- $75 nonrefundable application fee
- Two passport-sized photos
- Current resume, outlining educational and professional development
- Two letters of reference, with cover forms, sent directly to AOMA from professionals, instructors, and/or employers who can speak to the applicant’s skills and ability to perform masters level studies
- Official college transcripts sent directly from the college(s) attended to AOMA’s admissions office
- Copies of any professional licenses or certificates
- Personal statement of no less than 350 words to include:
- Reasons for embarking on this course of study at this school
- Demonstration of a keen desire to study Oriental medicine
- Proof of an understanding of the major commitment of time, finances, and personal dedication necessary for a successful academic career
- Career plans
After receipt of all application materials, applicants will interview with the director of admissions and the admissions committee.
Acceptance or rejection will be communicated within two weeks of completion of the application and admissions interview.
Acceptance
All applications will be evaluated by the director of admissions and the admissions committee. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be mailed or communicated within two weeks of receipt of the completed application (including all supporting materials and application fee) and completion of the admissions interview. Applicants are encouraged to apply well in advance of their preferred entry date.
Exception
Students may be considered for admission if they have completed at least 90 semester credits (135 quarter credits) from a regionally accredited college or university, or its equivalent, with a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Coursework must be at the baccalaureate level. These 90 credits must include at least 30 credits of general education courses drawn from the following areas:
- Humanities and fine arts (minimum 6 credits)
- Social and behavioral sciences including history and political science (minimum 6 credits)
- Natural sciences and mathematics (minimum 6 credits)
- Communications, written and oral (minimum 6 credits)
Basic computer literacy is also expected.
The admissions director will assist prospective students with identifying specific courses among their completed work that satisfy the general education requirement.
Conditional Admissions
Applicants not meeting the above entrance requirements may be conditionally admitted as a transfer to the institution if they have demonstrated an aptitude for professional study of acupuncture and Oriental medicine through both of the following:
- Completion of a minimum of 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 2.5 (to include a minimum of 30 credits in general education from the areas described above); and
- Completion of at least one academic year (minimum 30 semester credits/45 quarter credits) of acupuncture and Oriental medicine studies with a minimum GPA of 2.75 at a recognized accredited institution.
