Student Life

Students come to AOMA from diverse backgrounds and inspired by many different experiences. Each individual brings a unique perspective that informs their study and practice of Chinese medicine and contributes to a vibrant community. While at AOMA, the bonds you form with your fellow students provide support and energy for the incredible alchemy of this transformational journey.

AOMA offers many opportunities for learning beyond the classroom and clinics. Students participate in the governance system of the school through the AOMA Student Association, which acts as a liaison between the student body, administration, and faculty. Students also take part in noontime and early evening forums on a wide range of topics that reflect the current student environment. Recent topics have included: Practicing Asian Bodywork Therapies in Texas, FarEast Herbs, Toltec Healing Wisdom, Marketing in a Web 2.0 world, Essential Oils and Oriental Medicine, Financial Planning for Students, and New Practice Management. AOMA’s annual Southwest Symposium offers students the opportunity to hear internationally renowned speakers at the forefront of Oriental medicine. Every other year, students on AOMA’s China Study Tour travel to the birthplace of Oriental medicine, spending one week in Beijing, three weeks observing rounds at Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and one week studying TaiChi and Qigong at Emei Mountain.

Social events help to balance the challenging academic environment at AOMA. The student association sponsors parties for Halloween, breakfasts during finals, and swimming trips to cool off during the summer months. AOMA sponsors Chinese new year celebrations, Kung Fu movie nights, student mixers, and kayaking trips on Lady Bird Lake. The vitality of the city of Austin is mirrored in AOMA’s campus community.
